Lab Furniture Materials

It doesn’t matter if you are replacing the furniture in an existing laboratory or if you are in the process of building an entirely new lab, it is critical to think about the types of materials that your lab furniture is made from.  Typically, furniture of this type should last at least 15 years.  Since thus type of furniture tends to be a bit pricey, it is imperative that you get furniture that will last as long as possible.  Choosing the right materials will ensure that you can do just that.

Plastic Laminate

If you need good lab furniture but you are on a budget, this might be your best option.  Of course, it will depend on the application that it will be used for.  You might find that your furniture should be covered with a coating that is resistant to chemicals.  You should also understand that out of all of the materials that this type of furniture is made from, plastic laminate has the shortest life span and will not be suitable for use with all applications.

Metal

If you have a budget that is a bit larger, you might consider metal for your lab furniture.  This is still a cost effective option, but it will also withstand abuse better when compared with the other materials this furniture can be made from.  Because of the fact that metal furniture is both sturdy and cost effective, this is what is used most often in commercial settings.  With that being said, metal will not be suitable for all applications.

Stainless Steel

This is an expensive option for lab furniture.  However, it stands up to wear and tear.  It is non – porous, and that makes it an excellent option for labs that necessitate a certain level of hygiene.

Wood

This option will cost you less than stainless steel.  While it does have more of an aesthetic appeal to some people, it will not hold up well in high use laboratories.

Phenolic Resin

This material is resistant to corrosion.  Because of this, it is a good choice for applications involving acid, or even in wet applications in which rusting might be an issue.  This is also a more cost effective option than stainless steel, but it offers a life span that is similar.

Polypropylene

This is the most expensive option when it comes to materials for laboratory furniture.  It is used mostly in environments that are highly acidic.

When you are getting ready to choose furniture for your lab, remember that it is critical that you choose materials that will hold up to whatever applications you will be using it in.  Remember that not all materials will be appropriate for every application.
